Karate drills can be learned while having fun! Often young students go back home after karate training and show and tell the new things they’ve learned at their karate lesson. It is the atmosphere we create during training that make kids feel excited and entertained while learning. They will practice without being told outside the dojo and they will look forward to the next training session. This lasting excitement is manifestation of happiness. In addition to all the other benefits of practice, karate gives kids a healthy vibe that extents to all people they come in contact with.

Growing up is a hard task. Karate helps during this period by providing an environment that is conducive to disciplined behaviour. This behaviour is informed by the code of ethics of the karate practitioner, which in essence is a replica of ideas of respect and good manners we live by within society. By practicing karate children will also be able to practice behaviour that is desirable at home and in social environments.

There is something about Japanese martial arts that builds confidence, and it’s not just the shouting! Karate practice provides challenges and rewards for the mind and body at every turn. Children at our dojo learn karate drills that challenge coordination, concentration and expression. Kids are required to learn and repeat movements that will then be performed in front of the instructor and peers. This gives an immediate sense of achievement that enables children to build confidence.

Modern martial arts offers structured learning, a system proven for decades. At Okukan, the practical aspects of Shitoryu Karatedo are learnt in progressive stages. Children learn Kata (pattern) and Bunkai (self-defence application), Kihon (form practice) and Kumite (sparring) practice. Even though karate is a never-ending learning curve, children and instructor generally know when they are ready to go through the next learning stage. Children are then invited to be a part of a symbolic examination to commemorate this moment.

Instruction operates within the rules, spirit and integrity of Shitoryu Karatedo. We promote learning over competitive sport, but opportunities are open to students interested in this particular aspect of Karatedo.
At Okukan we endeavour to assess each student’s performance objectively and individually, encouraging fair participation and helping each student reach their potential. Learning activities designed in our school promote an environment were members of our community are treated with courtesy and care regardless of gender, ability, cultural background or religion, including students, parents, guests, and staff members.
